Welcome to our page focusing on our units of study. At this time you can see an overview of what's planned for this year in our classroom. Please remember that if you have questions or need information not listed here to contact me with any questions!
Students will follow a scope, sequence and pacing guide that is correlated to the other 6th grade classrooms. Our scope and sequence will include interventions and enrichments that are based on the student's skill for a specific concept or strategy. Student groups may change daily, weekly or monthly depending on the length of the lesson or unit.
Many of our math days will be spent on specific skills and standards for student grade level and above grade level for those students who are ready for more advanced material. Extension activities will also be made available for students who are ready to extend their thinking.
Fridays will be spent in small groups. Students will lead small groups in solving difficult word problems. Groups will need to work together and participate in order to work through these processes.
We will read many novels this year as individuals, small groups, and a whole class! The novels that are chosen to be read together are likely to be more advanced than the books students would normally choose.
This year we will focus on novels that represent the dynamics of choice and change both personally and within a society.
Students will learn that there are many types of relationships including personal, professional, mathematical, scientific and historical.
We will be examining language as it appears in texts and how we can apply it to our own work as well as analyzing complex themes.
Our curriculum will use both Junior Great Books and a Language Arts program designed by William and Mary University as well as novel study.
Students can look forward to learning about Ancent Civilizations and how they develop and change over time. Social studies and literature will compliment and reinforce material during the course of the year.
Science will focus on the following 6th grade topics.
We will be studying the diversity of life, earth's formation, planetary science and man's impact on the ever changing environment.
Our writing will focus on many of the novels and texts we have. Students will revise and edit their work on occasion in order to complete their work to the best of their ability. Writing will be a major part of all our subject areas including literature, math, science and social studies.
Studies will also study root words, prefixes and suffixes.
